Bio-D was founded by Michael Barwell in Hull in 1989. Michael was determined to create household cleaners that provided a naturally derived alternative to those that relied heavily on harmful chemicals. Bio-D are committed to creating effective, ethical and affordable cleaning products.

Bio-D have complete traceability on all their ingredients to ensure that they are ethically and sustainably sourced. Any palm oil used in their products is from RSPO certified sustainable sources.

Bio-D products are made from naturally derived ingredients and do not contain any substances that are known to be highly toxic to animals meaning that, provided the instructions for use are followed, they are completely safe to use around pets and animals.

Unlike in other cleaning products, here’s what you won’t find in anything from Bio-D:

  • Chemical plasticisers – typically used to make products easier to mould
  • Formaldehyde – a preservative used in many products
  • Synthetic dyes or perfumes
  • Titanium dioxide – a colouring agent that causes water pollution
  • Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) – a cause of skin irritation and allergic contact dermatitis
  • Phthalates – a group of chemicals used to make plastics more durable. They are detrimental to the reproductive, neurological and developmental systems
  • Phosphates – commonly used in cleaning products, these can cause excessive growth of algae, starving waters of oxygen and killing fish and plant life
  • D.T.A. (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) - attracts heavy metals such as lead and mercury which are known to have carcinogenic properties.
  • Enzymes – these can be genetically engendered in the manufacturing process and have been known to irritate skin and cause asthma attacks
  • Optical brighteners – these can cause mutations to microorganisms in receiving waters and are very difficult to biodegrade
  • Urea – derived from animal urine and used to break down proteins
  • Lanolin – found in wool. When used in cleaning products this is often purchased from sources with very low animal welfare standards
  • Methylisothiazolinone (MI) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) – used in many toiletries, these are attributed to a rise in allergies such as contact dermatitis
  • Tallow – an animal triglyceride. Like lanolin, when used in cleaning products this is often purchased from sources with very low animal welfare standards
  • Triclosan – often found in antibacterial products, it is known to be hazardous to humans and may affect hormone regulation
  • Genetically or synthetically modified organisms – often used as a replacement for palm oil, there have not yet been any independent safety tests carried out to determine how safe they are for humans
  • Chlorine bleaches – the breakdown of these can create carcinogenic substances
  • Petroleum-derived additives – they can contain toxic impurities that can cause allergic reactions and endanger plant and animal life
